Et Dieu… créa la femme (1956)

 

À cette période, Roger Vadim écrit avec Raoul Lévy un scénario, intitulé Et Dieu... créa la femme. Aucun producteur ne veut financer le film. Brigitte Bardot se rend alors au festival de Cannes. Tout le monde parle d'elle et la starlette qu'elle est devenue éclipse Sophia Loren et Gina Lollobrigida, les plus grandes stars de l'époque. Les flashs des photographes se déclenchent sur son passage et son sex-appeal émeut la Croisette. C'est finalement grâce à l'approbation de Curd Jürgens, acteur important de cette époque, pour qui Vadim et Lévy ont taillé sur mesure le rôle d'Éric Carradine, qu'ils obtiennent le financement nécessaire. Le tournage a lieu à Saint-Tropez. C'est ce film qui lui permet d'entrer dans la légende du cinéma mondial et de devenir un mythe vivant, un modèle social et un sex-symbol international.

 

La jeune artiste y joue le rôle de Juliette Hardy face à Curd Jürgens, Christian Marquand et Jean-Louis Trintignant avec lequel se noue une liaison. Un an plus tard, le 6 décembre 1957, elle divorce de Vadim. Celui-ci définit ainsi le personnage qu'elle interprète :

" Je voulais, à travers Brigitte, restituer le climat d'une époque, Juliette est une fille de son temps, qui s'est affranchie de tout sentiment de culpabilité, de tout tabou imposé par la société et dont la sexualité est entièrement libre. Dans la littérature et les films d'avant-guerre, on l'aurait assimilée à une prostituée. C'est dans ce film une très jeune femme, généreuse, parfois désaxée et finalement insaisissable, qui n'a d'autre excuse que sa générosité. "

À sa sortie en France, le film est accueilli avec une certaine réserve. Les Cahiers du cinéma reprochent la facilité du sujet et le choix des acteurs. Brigitte Bardot est critiquée sans indulgence pour son verbe traînant et son articulation douteuse. Paul Reboux dit d'elle qu'elle a " le physique d'une boniche et la façon de parler des illettrés! " Raoul Lévy et Roger Vadim décident d'exploiter le film à l'étranger en espérant qu'il y sera un succès. Rebaptisé And God Created Woman, il fait un triomphe aux États-Unis. " C'était un succès extraordinaire, les critiques se montraient dithyrambiques, je devenais soudain la Française la plus connue outre-Atlantique " se rappelle Bardot quelques années plus tard. Les Américains inventent même le terme " bardolâtrie " pour qualifier l'enthousiasme qu'elle suscite. Simone de Beauvoir affirme qu'" [elle] marche lascivement et un saint vendrait son âme au diable pour la voir danser ". Le film ressort alors en France et connaît un triomphe retentissant. Cinémonde écrit : " Le sex-appeal, c'est Marlène Dietrich, le glamour, c'est Ava Gardner, le oomph, c'est Jane Russell, le t'ça, c'est Suzy Delair, le pep, c'est Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot mélange tous ces ingrédients explosifs, y ajoute un zeste de fantaisie personnelle, elle sera le pschitt! "
